Vegetarian bao bun place with vegan options.
Guilty pleasure
They were aiming for something that would offer the same kind of guilty pleasure as a Big Mac, but vegetarian! It was during corona times, and longtime friends Simon and Mathieu were thinking about starting their own restaurant. In Amsterdam they missed decent options when you’re craving a burger, but don’t want to eat meat (or something mimicking meat).
They started out by preparing different sandwiches for each other, then for a birthday catering, then signed up on a delivery platform while restaurants were closed because of corona restrictions. They decided to go for bao buns, steamed buns originally from China. After doing some pop-ups, they finally opened up their place in March 2024.
Steamed and grilled
Everything on the menu is vegetarian. From the five bao buns they have, the Sticky Tempeh (Surinamese style crispy tempeh), the Peking Duk (seitan ‘duck’ with hoisin sauce) and the Mexican Mushroom (oyster mushroom ‘Tinga’) are vegan. The buns are first steamed, and finally finished on the plancha!
From the side dishes the Smashed Cucumber salad, the Kimchi and the Fries are vegan.
Handdrawn
Larry’s is located at Kinkerstraat, near the corner with Bilderdijkstraat. Trams 3, 7 and 17 stop basically in front of the door. They have some seating inside on stools, fastfood restaurant style. Their food is also available for delivery.
Fun fact, their logo is designed by Mathieu, who besides being a chef is also an illustrator!
