Vegan people’s kitchen every Wednesday. Cooked with rescued food by volunteers, meal is donation based.

Cargo bike

Taste Before You Waste started in 2012 in an effort to reduce food waste. Several times a week, volunteers cycle with a cargo bike past various food stores at Javastraat to pick up food which would otherwise get thrown away. On Wednesdays this food is used to prepare a three-course meal, aka ‘Wasteless Dinner’. By directly saving food, their mission is also to create awareness amongst citizens about consumer food waste.

The reason why the food they offer is vegan is that that way they can reach the widest audience, as well as be the safest regarding food safety guidelines. Also vegan food has maximum shelf life, so there’s the least spoilage, tells chairperson Wingston Sharon. He is programmer by profession, many other volunteers are students.

Food Market

Doors for the Wednesday dinner open at 18:30. No reservation needed, but they operate on a first come first served basis.

Every Monday, Taste Before You Waste hosts a food market, where people can come and pick up fruit and vegetables on donation basis. This is also an opportunity to meet up, sometimes they organise discussion nights. Other events they may host or engage in are music performances, workshops, catering etc.

Interested in volunteering? Check out their website or apply here.

Taste Before You Waste is located at Plantage Dok, a social centre in the Plantage neighbourhood. Tram 14 stops nearby.
